According to @mastodonusercount@mastodon.social, there are now 12 million #Mastodon accounts.

This is good news for the growth of the
#Fediverse, but there's a caveat.

Other than on mastodon.social, Mastodon sign-ups are slowing down. In my own estimation, the majority of Mastodon servers aren't experiencing any growth -- and many are losing users too.

At one point,
https://joinmastodon.org was critical for driving sign-ups amongst many Mastodon servers. But from what numerous admins tell me, sign-ups from there have slowed to a trickle.

With
https://home.social closing down soon, I fear this is a harbinger for more big server shutdowns. That is, unless something is done.

However, Mastodon isn't the entirety of the story.

It looks like *key apps are spurring more user adoption.

#Misskey is now the 2nd most used Fediverse software after Mastodon.

And within a month,
#Calckey has nearly doubled in size -- despite the flagship server (which I admin) overcoming a few key challenges.

Of course, the arrival of
#Barcelona will change everything. How? I don't entirely know.

But now with 12 million Mastodon accounts, it's time for the next chapter of the Fediverse.

@atomicpoet
that bot is not substracting users of Mastodon servers that are gone. Current Mastodon users of *alive* servers are around 7,614,000, according with @fediverse @mastodonusercount

@spla@mastodont.cat @fediverse@mastodont.cat @mastodonusercount@mastodon.social The count varies. Some say ~10 million, some say ~9 million, and some counts go as low as ~6 million. No one will ever know because the nature of federation also allows for defederation and opting out from statistics counts.

For example, the second biggest Mastodon server often doesn't get counted because of defederation.

@atomicpoet right but do you agree with me that is not right counting users from dead servers?
@fediverse @mastodonusercount

@spla@mastodont.cat @fediverse@mastodont.cat @mastodonusercount@mastodon.social Not really because there's some data to be gleaned from counting every Mastodon account both alive and dead.

@spla@mastodont.cat @fediverse@mastodont.cat @mastodonusercount@mastodon.social 12 million Mastodon accounts isn't "real Fediverse" either.

But funny enough,
https://the-federation.info counts 12,276,328 Fediverse accounts, so "real Fediverse" count is not so off from @mastodonusercount@mastodon.social's count.

However, that's neither here nor there. The more interesting data point is: if 12 million Mastodon accounts have been created, why is only 9 million "alive"?

I have a few thoughts about this, but that's for another day.
